Secretary of State Ashcroft is traveling Missouri to explain the new photo ID law

Image
Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft plans to tour the state in the coming weeks to speak about Missouri's new elections law, which includes a photo ID requirement, that went into effect last weekend. Ashcroft , a Republican who has been an advocate for additional voting requirements, announced the campaign in a news release Tuesday, calling it an effort "to avoid misrepresentation or confusion" about the law . Passed by Republican state lawmakers earlier this year, House Bill 1878 includes the latest attempt to require voters to provide a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport, at the polls. Those who do not have a photo ID at the time of voting can cast a provisional ballot. It also allows for two weeks of early in-person voting with no excuse, lets the secretary of state audit voter rolls, and bans drop boxes for absentee ballots, among other provisions. Louisiana Tech Has A New-look Offensive System. How Is Mizzou Football Preparing For The Unknown?

Image
When Missouri takes on Louisiana Tech on Thursday at Faurot Field, the Tigers will be going into a relative unknown. Beyond the fact that it will be the first matchup ever between the two programs, Missouri finds the Bulldogs in a time of transition. After a 3-9 record spelled the end for former coach Skip Holtz, Louisiana Tech turned to former Texas Tech offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie to lead the team. Thursday will be his first game at the helm. "We’re unsure of what Louisiana Tech has,” Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz said Sunday. “We do know they have good players. Their record last year wasn’t indicative of how close they were. ... They’re not going to be intimidated.” More: Mizzou football opens the 2022 season against Louisiana Tech. Here’s how to watch. The Tigers know Cumbie likes to run an air-raid-inspired offense after playing and coaching under current Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach at Texas Tech. Still, they don’t have any film of the current p...

Marlene Stollings to receive $740K as part of settlement in lawsuit against Texas Tech

Image
Texas Tech agreed to pay former women's basketball coach Marlene Stollings a little more than $740,000 as part of a settlement of a lawsuit in which she accused the school and its athletics director, Kirby Hocutt, of discrimination and retaliation, according to a copy of the settlement agreement USA TODAY Sports obtained from the university through a public records request. The school fired Stollings for cause in August 2020, the day after the publication of an investigation by USA TODAY Sports and The Intercollegiate, a college sports investigative media outlet. Players alleged there was a culture of abuse under Stollings and described a toxic culture that generated "fear, anxiety, and depression." In her lawsuit, Stollings argued that two internal reviews conducted by the school before the investigation was published cleared her of the allegations. 'Fast Tech' Is Unsustainable: The Circular Economy Is the Smart Answer for Growth

Image
With the pace of innovation ever increasing, technology can feel antiquated fast . Consumers, as well as businesses, have become accustomed to upgrading devices regularly and discarding "outdated" tech. But what happens to last year's laptops, mobile phones, and tech accessories ? According to the United Nations, the world produces more than 50 million tons of electronic waste per year. Much like the fashion industry has had to come to terms with the dark side of so-called "fast fashion" -- cheap, environmentally damaging clothing created quickly to mimic runway trends -- the tech industry must reckon with the environmental implications of "fast tech." Whether knowingly or unknowingly, some tech companies are feeding into the idea of planned obsolescence -- creating less-durable products for the sake of introducing new ones on a regular basis. There is a better way, and it lies in the circular economy. Unlike the linear economy, in which companie...

If Economists Fear Inflation, It’s a Sign You Should Not

Image
It was a running  joke  in the late  1990 s at Goldman Sachs that its well-to-do clients would call the investment bank to learn the predictions of the firm’s economists, only to commit capital to outcomes opposite the predictions. Apparently, the contrarian trades were lucrative. This brings us to former Bank of Canada and Bank of England's central   banker , Mark Carney. Carney is a former Goldman employee, which probably shouldn’t surprise us. Central bankers have long mirrored Goldman’s economists when it comes to incorrect predictions. Give Carney credit that he knows well where he’ll fit in. The Wall Street Journal recently reported on Carney’s claim that “The long era of  low  inflation, suppressed volatility, and easy financial conditions are ending.” Oh, dear. If Carney is believed, fixing inflation is herculean in concert with natural barriers to credit growth. With inflation first in mind imagine Carney being in a position of power back in  ...

" Inflation Fever " Is Finally Breaking — But Central Banks Won’t Stop Hiking Rates

Image
Global inflation   is finally coming off the boil, even if it’s set to remain far too hot for the liking of the world’s central bankers. As economic growth slows, prices for  key  raw materials — from oil to copper and wheat — have cooled in recent weeks, taking pressure off the cost of manufactured goods and food. And it’s getting cheaper to move those things around, as supply chains slowly recover from the  pandemic . After the worst price shock in decades, the speed at which relief arrives will vary, with  Europe  in particular still struggling. But for the world as a whole, analysts at JPMorgan Chase & Co. estimate that consumer-price inflation will fall to  5.1%  in the second half of this year — roughly half of what it was in the six months through June. “The inflation fever is breaking,” says Bruce Kasman, the bank’s chief  economist. That doesn’t mean an early return to the subdued inflation that much of the world enjoyed before t...
